Driving North Carolina’s Talent Future — One Strategy, One Community, One Learner at a Time

2025 was a year defined by urgency, action, and unmistakable momentum. With just five years left to reach North Carolina’s goal of 2 million residents ages 25–44 holding a degree or credential of value by 2030, myFutureNC accelerated its focus on proven strategies, local innovation, and strong cross-sector partnerships. This year’s work sharpened statewide priorities, expanded access to real-time data, showcased scalable models, and brought together partners who believe — and consistently demonstrate — that developing talent is a shared responsibility

2025 State of Educational Attainment: A Clearer Picture, A Stronger Direction

At the 2025 State of Educational Attainment event, leaders highlighted the state’s significant progress toward the 2030 goal — now reaching 1.66 million residents with a degree or credential. Speakers underscored that this momentum reflects rising alignment across education, workforce, business, and government sectors as North Carolina’s economy grows and demand for skilled talent intensifies.

They emphasized the continued urgency of strengthening early education, increasing adult enrollment and completion, and ensuring programs match high-demand careers.  With updated county and regional data tools, clear policy recommendations, and strong bipartisan support, myFutureNC issued a renewed call for accelerating progress in the second half of this journey.

The 2025 report offered a comprehensive view of how North Carolina’s learners, communities, and industries are advancing toward the statewide goal.

Celebrating Impact: 2025 Champions for Attainment

This year’s five Champions for Attainment exemplify the practical, measurable, community-driven work pushing North Carolina closer to 2030.

2025 Champions for Attainment

  •  Aspire Appalachian Program at Appalachian State University
  • Gregory Singleton
  • Campbell University’s Second Chance Initiative
  • Craven Community College’s Volt Center
  • Wayne County Reentry Council

To amplify these strategies, myFutureNC produced short, bite-sized webinars that make it easy for organizations to learn from what’s working. These leaders aren’t just doing good work — they’re proving what gets results. Each model offers strategies that can be adapted and scaled statewide to help communities facing similar challenges.

3rd Annual Financial Aid Summit: Investing in Student Futures

The 2025 Financial Aid Summit convened educators, financial aid professionals, policymakers, and practitioners around one core message: financial aid is infrastructure. Sessions focused on helping students navigate the updated FAFSA, increasing access to scholarships and short-term workforce grants, and strengthening alignment between aid systems and high-demand career pathways. The takeaway was clear: when North Carolinians can afford education, they enroll, persist, and succeed — and the state moves closer to building a thriving, future-ready workforce. Participants left with action-ready strategies to support students through the first full cycle of the redesigned FAFSA rollout, ensuring affordability remains a driver of enrollment and completion.

Advancing Evidence-Based Attainment Strategies: Three Key 2025 Convenings

myFutureNC hosted convenings around three evidence-based attainment strategies in 2025 to address persistent barriers and co-design practical solutions for justice-involved individuals, military-connected families, and workers seeking upskilling. These gatherings brought together employers, educators, state agencies, nonprofits, and policymakers to share successful models, identify gaps, and commit to next steps.

Across all sessions, partners emphasized the need for clearer pathways, stronger coordination, and better access to resources supporting transitions into education and high-demand careers. A common theme emerged: building a strong talent pipeline requires systems that share data, share responsibility, and move in sync. Together, these convenings underscore a statewide push to remove obstacles, strengthen talent pipelines, and broaden opportunity for North Carolinians of every background.
